Dead Zone

Mam, it’s massive

have a walk down to it

hurry up lass

why’s it lying on its side

look at them teeth

doesn’t look real

I saw it move

never seen a whale,

I can taste sand

is it breathing

I’ll have chips with it

the wind’s getting up

is the washing still out

it’s not real it’s

a climate change thing

the dogs won’t go near it

go and ask your question

How does this happen?

The sea

is deafening

their world is

sound

dump lots of rubbish

take all the food out

The sea

is warming

we’re seeing Dolphin,

Orca, Minke Whale

currents changing

North Sea not deep

enough for food

seal pups only

just over birth weight

at five months old

if they dredge

this will be a dead zone

the scars

Dolphins are terrible

for dragging their teeth

along things

eat an octopus the

octopus fights back

leaves a scar

he’s just a juvenile

a child

if they beach

their family strands

with them

but we’re still whaling

the sea turns red

in the name of tradition

meat so toxic

only eat a matchbox size of it

kill one kill all

they flock

to the injured

this will be a dead zone

I was hoping to touch it

Our family

'stranding'

we do our bit

'it’s not real'

we do the sunsets and sunrises

'it’s all plastic'

that’s what we’ll do

'how does this happen'

we’ll come down one day

'it’s just an experiment'

walk the full length of the beach

'is it breathing'

touch the sand

'it’s not real'

I love Redcar

'get a picture'

we’re spoiled

'when they kill one'

we’re blessed

'they kill them all'

they could

'leave a scar'

make Redcar

'more realistic'

amazing

'a dead zone'

again
